Why hypoallergenic products don’t exist

As a brand built on transparency, we will never claim to be hypoallergenic.

This is a term coined by cosmetic companies to promote their products, but what does hypoallergenic actually mean?

Besides being associated with animal testing (yes - if a product says its hypoallergenic, it means some sort of specific testing on a "body able to carry the product" has occurred, according to dermatologists, "hypoallergenic" carries little meaning (or whatever a manufacturer might want it to mean).

If you are shopping and see a product labelled “hypoallergenic” you might assume that the ingredients are fragrance free or designed for people with allergies and are therefore safe to use. The truth is, it’s impossible to say that anything is allergen free. Realistically, consumers can be allergic to anything, and can develop allergies as time goes on. So let’s take a look at the official definition:

Hypoallergenic = relatively unlikely to cause an allergic reaction

Relatively unlikely doesn’t fill me with confidence that a product is entirely allergen free. That’s because it isn’t.

The worst part about brands calling themselves hypoallergenic is that often, their ingredient lists are still full of all the commonly known allergens.

Monkey + Moon products aren’t hypoallergenic because we would be lying to you if we said they were.

What we can promise is that our toothpaste is as minimal and allergen free as possible. We have taken every step to remove commonly and not so commonly known allergens from our toothpaste whilst maintaining a great flavour and effective formula. We will never, however, compromise on the safety of our formula for allergy sufferers by adding exotic sounding botanical extracts and flavourings that could cause reactions for different people. Our product ingredients are based on the professional medical knowledge of an NHS dentist, years of research and first-hand experience of severe contact dermatitis.

Consumers can trust Monkey + Moon to never change our formulas or add in sneaky perfumes and preservatives. Catering for allergy sufferers is an integral part of our company ethos.
